The Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) 2023, held in Madagascar from August 23 to September 3, were nothing short of spectacular for Team Mauritius. Our athletes gave their all, and their exceptional performances filled us with pride. Mauritius secured a total of 283 medals, a testament to the dedication and talent of our athletes. Among these medals were 91 gold, 89 silver, and 103 bronze, showcasing our prowess in various sports.
Several standout moments deserve special mention.
After an 11-year hiatus, Mauritius made a triumphant return to wrestling at the IOIG, winning an impressive five gold medals. In our first-ever participation in petanque, our athletes astonished us with their fantastic performances, underlining the depth of talent in our nation.
However, it wasn’t just about medals; the IOIG also highlighted the true spirit of camaraderie and support among Mauritians. Athletes from various disciplines came together to cheer for one another, creating an atmosphere of unity and encouragement.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our athletes, coaches, and National Sports Federations for their unwavering efforts and commitment. We also acknowledge the vital support provided by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, and Recreation in making this participation possible.
As we look to the future, we are excited to announce that the next IOIG will be hosted in the Comoros. It’s an opportunity for us to continue building on our successes and showcasing the talent and sportsmanship of Team Mauritius on the regional stage.
Once again, congratulations to all our athletes for their outstanding performances, and thank you to everyone who played a part in this remarkable journey.
